CITÉ ALLENDE

Port-Saint-Louis du Rhône. A city at the end of the road. Before the port and its dockers. In a city where the per capita income is one of the lowest in France, I wandered around for a week. Between unwelcoming bars and deserted streets.

 

Boredom. My project to document this city was falling through.

 

And then an encounter. A basketball pitch transformed into a boxing ring. Youths meet there. They fight. They get hurt. And then hug each other. In a mixture of violence and tenderness, they reflect their territory.

 

Distrustful and endearing.
